Osun State
Internal Revenue Service yesterday, sealed off the Oduduwa University,
lpetumodu, over alleged tax default of N173 million.
The Senior
Special Assistant on Revenue to the state governor, Mr. Femi Balogun, told
journalists that the university authorities defaulted in the remittance of
personal income taxes of its workers.
Balogun who led
the team that sealed off the institution, said the tax liabilities covered
back-duty liability from 2006-2011.
He said the
enforcement effort was the last stage of any tax process and was in line
with Section 104 sub section 1 and 2 of Personal Income Tax Act as amended.
According to
him, “Tax payment is a law and a civic responsibility of all and sundry. lt is
through this effort that government will provide enabling environment such as
infrastructure and security.”
He said the
state government would henceforth stop at nothing to ensure that every body
performs his or her civic obligations.
He urged
the university authorities to do the needful by paying up its tax liability to
avoid prosecution in a court of law as stipulated by Section 99 of Personal
Income Tax Act as amended.
He said the
government has commenced the general enforcement on all the corporate tax
defaulters and within the next few days, the enforcement team would visit all
tax defaulters, saying they have been working against the development of the
state.
Balogun
urged all taxpayers and companies with outstanding tax liabilities to
resolve their tax issues to avoid embarrassment.
