THE military has opened up the busy Nyanya-Mararaba-Abuja highway to
motorists, following mounted public outcry over gridlock on the road, days
after the bomb blast at the Nyanya motor park.
Three days after the blast, which claimed many lives and injured several
others, armed soldiers mounted roadblocks at about 100 metres to the scene of
the incident, which resulted to gridlock on the road from Keffi, Nassarawa
State, to Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as reported on Wednesday.
It was learnt that following the hardship experienced on the road by
motorists and commuters alike, as reported in the media, the presidency and the
military high command reportedly waded in and directed that the operation
should be reviewed immediately to ease the hardship.
A visit to the road on Thursday showed that the roadblocks had been
reviewed as directed and relocated to another point, between Karu junction and
Kugbo axis, while vehicles were seen moving freely, but with the stern-looking
armed soldiers stationed at strategic positions in case of any eventuality.
It was also observed that all the motorcycle operators, who had been
making brisk business on the road since the incident occurred had gone back to
their normal routes, as normalcy had been fully restored.
Speaking on the new lease of life on the road, commuters and motorists
expressed satisfaction on the development.
Both the FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed and the Information Minister,
Labaran Maku, had earlier pleaded with members of the public to bear with the
situation, saying something urgent was being done to address the situation.
