GOVERNMENT of the United States, through its mission in Nigeria, has
issued travel alert, where it urged all its citizens living and travelling in
Nigeria to take extra precautions for their personal security and safety.
The mission advised all US citizens to be particularly vigilant around
churches and other places of worship, government facilities and areas
frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers during the upcoming holiday
weekend.
The Federal Government has declared today and Monday public holidays,
but the mission stated that it issued the alert, given the history of bombing
attacks on weekends, some associated with holidays, as well as the recent
bombing at Nyanya, near Abuja, on April 14.
In the alert, the US observed that security measures in Nigeria remained
heightened due to threats posed by extremist groups.
To that extent, it urged its citizens to expect additional police and military checkpoints, additional security and possible roadblocks throughout the country during the holidays.
