The federal government has explained
why late General Sani Abacha was among those who received the centenary award
for 100 Nigerians In the programme of the Centenary Honours Award, the federal
government said he was a Nigerian soldier and politician who served as the
de-facto President of Nigeria from1993 to 1998.
According to the government, Abacha’s regime was one of the most controversial in Nigeria’s history. His regime became the first to record unprecedented economic achievements.
The federal government also said Abacha oversaw an increase in the country’s foreign exchange reserves from $494 million in 1993 to $9.6 billion by the middle of 2997, reduced the external debt of Nigeria from $36 billion in 1993 to $27 billion in 1997.
The government noted that he brought all the controversial privatisation programmes of the Babangida administration to a halt, reduced an inflation rate of 54 per cent inherited from Babangida to 8.5 per cent between 1993 and 1998, while the nation’s primary commodity, oil, was at an average of $9 per barrel.
Abacha’s administration was also said to be credited with creating the most comprehensive and realistic blueprint for Nigeria’s development through Vision 2010 committee chaired by his predecessor, Chief Ernest Shonekan

ReplyDeleteWhy then are we condeming him even by the leaders if he achieved so much? From the analysis, he could be seen as the best president Nigeria ever produced even with the monumental looting of the treasury. Good analysis indeed.
ReplyDeleteHe should be hornoured because he was better than Jonathan , the sniper trainer and oil thief.
ReplyDeleteHope Jona would also stop stealing for our foreign reserve to grow
ReplyDeleteAbacha tried but the dent was that he stole soo soo much....thiefing over 5billion dolls by 1996 was not a small tin o...and we are sure thats not all of the money as we are still recovering the stolen funds till tomorrow
ReplyDeleteYea he should be honored because he was the one that created over 40 local government for the deserted Kano state and left a highly populated Lagos state with just 20. And most of all he should be honored because he was the only one that could humbled that Egba Chimpanzee (OBJ) when he (OBJ) wrote an upon letter that he wasn't suppose 2 write 2 his superior (Abacha).
ReplyDeleteIf he stole so much and could stil pay our debts and do some projects means there is a lot of money in dis country 4 all Nigerians to spend so why are we stil suffering I mean majority of Nigerians, but stil 4 his lot of killings of innocent people and using another person`s mandate he doesn't deserve to be honoured,it shows dis administration encourages killing of innocent people it is happening in d north and yet they are celebrating in Abuja, dis government also encourage corruption dat is why dat despise Abacha looted our money dis government still honour him bcause jonathan himself is looting massively, shamless government is dis government
ReplyDeleteRaphael , u are a rabid intellectual dross filtered off a bin litter , polluted by ignorance , darkened by ethnic divisions and particularities ! A misfit in political analysis ! Let me tell u a man should be honored for his best and critized for his worst ! Abacha deserves the award ! Much as u deserve my poetic slime !
