THE Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People has denied endorsing
the Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, as the next governor of River
State in 2015.
MOSOP said in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Sunday that it had
not approved any aspirant for the position of the governor.
The President of MOSOP, Mr. Legborsi Pyagbara, in a statement signed by
his Media/Public Affairs Advisor, Mr. Bari-ara Kpalap, warned politicians to
stop dragging the name of the Ogoni nationality in an attempt to please their
financiers.
Calling on members of the public to ignore the claim that the movement
had approved a particular aspirant as governor, Pyagbara lamented that a few
‘shortsighted’ Ogoni politicians were bent on holding the nationality hostage.
He said, “It is a shame that whilst our people have collectively
resolved to move from the Egypt of political marginalisation to the
Canaan of effective political representation as adumbrated in the Ogoni Bill of
Rights, some few shortsighted Ogoni politicians still want to hold our
nationality hostage with their slave mentality of subservience and deadly
acquiescence for a pot of pottage in Egypt.
“We want to remind them that evidences abound that our people are
unanimous on their desire to lead Rivers State come 2015 and we do not see how
Ogoni would contemplate endorsing a non-Ogoni over the Ogoni.
“Reports connecting some Ogoni members of a so-called Ogoni/Orashi
Alliance had alleged that Ogoni had ratified Nyesom Wike for the 2015 Rivers
State governorship contest. We wish to reiterate that Ogoni cannot be put up
for sale, not by any Ogoni person nor by any outsider.”
He stated that MOSOP was aware of the plot to frustrate the resolve of
the Ogoni to fight its marginalisation.
Meanwhile, the people of Etche ethnic nationality have endorsed Wike as
the successor to the incumbent governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi.
An elder statesman and PDP stalwart, Prince Emma Anyanwu, who disclosed
this on Sunday, said Wike’s endorsement by the people of Etche was as a result
of the minister’s detribalised nature, capacity and integrity to lead the state
to the Promised Land.
