The police in
Lagos have arrested 13 persons allegedly involved in touting in some embassies
on Walter Carrington Street, Victoria Island.
Checks revealed
that 27 persons were arrested by policemen attached to Bar Beach Police
Division, led by the DPO, Mr. Fayoade Adegoke.
He was said
to have ordered a comprehensive screening of the suspects and they discovered
that 13 of them could not be identified with genuine businesses in the area.
It was gathered
that the police raided the street after some embassies had written petitions to
the commissioner of police for intervention.
“A number of
touts, agents and vendors continue to harass visa applicants in front of our
embassy buildings. The property along the road we use for parking lot had been
blocked by touts loitering near the parking lot.
“We learnt
that some anti-riot policemen attached to some of the embassies were conniving
with the touts to collect illegal fee from motorists that parked
indiscriminately in front of the embassy.
“After the
raid, the place seems to be free from touts for now as some of the persons
arrested had been charged to court,’’ a source said.
When
contacted, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Umar Manko, who
confirmed the arrest said the suspects were arrested during a raid on touts in
the area.
Manko said
many people were constituting themselves into nuisance in front of some
embassies in the area, saying the raid would continue.
