Minister
of Information and Supervising Minister of Defence, Mr. Labaran Maku said on
Tuesday that the suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam
Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, was merely parading voodoo statistics when he claimed
that different figures of oil money was missing from the Federation account.
Maku,
who stated this while speaking with newsmen when he visited the Senate to
defend his Ministry’s budget 2014,said that figures submitted by a Governor of
Central Bank should be sacrosanct.
He also
said that the claims by Sanusi that huge sums were missing in the Nigerian
National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) was an afterthought though,
following the heat turned on him by the government after the Financial
Reporting Council had indicted him.
He said:
“As for the NNPC don’t forget that a forensic audit of the NNPC has been
ordered. Remember Sanusi said $49.8 billion was missing, how much do we earn?
That means there was a free fall. But the story changed to $20 billion, $10.8
billion so nobody knows.... It is a voodoo statistics that are coming from the
CBN governor because if you want say something relating to the economy as CBN
governor his opinions are seen to be sacrosanct in any country, you don’t say
something without verifying it.
“No CBN
governor makes statement on his nation’s economy without verifying. Things were
done and the president didn’t worry about it and his removal had nothing to do
with that. These days we see a lot of outlandish allegations.”
According
to Maku, the CBN is the nerve centre of the nation’s financial system adding
that any miss by the CBN could create problems for the economy.
“You don’t
say something without verifying it. No CBN Governor makes statements on the
nation’s economy with verifying...These days, we see a lot of outlandish
allegations. People just make allegations and turn the country into one huge
investigation panel; everyday, the National Assembly is investigating...
He
insisted that Sanusi but merely painted the country in bad light with
unsubstantiated allegations.
“Sanusi is not a whistle blower . As the governor of Central Bank of
Nigeria that perception is fed by negative reports from the media. I have not
heard in any nation where the central bank governor is a whistle blower. He is
the manager of the nation’s monetary policies as an adviser to the president of
Nigeria on those issues. So the fact that he has moved from being the CBN
governor to whistle blowing is a problem in itself.
