There are indications that the Federal
Government may extend the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed
Abubakar, till after the 2015 general elections for strategic security reasons
and political expediency.
Abubakar, who is due to retire from the Force
in June, 2014, is believed to have impressed the government with the
innovations he has brought into the police as well as the discipline he has
infused in police personnel.
Abubakar joined the Nigeria Police Force as a
Cadet Inspector on July 30, 1979 and had held many important positions in the
Force before his appointment as the IG in 2012.
He was
appointed the acting IG on January 25, 2012 following the sacking of his
predecessor, Hafiz Ringim; and other service chiefs over their inability to
tame the violent Boko Haram sect.
According to police service rules, Abubakar is
expected to proceed on compulsory terminal leave by April, 2014, but sources
said there were chances that his tenure in office could be extended by the
Presidency to ensure smooth security for the 2015 general elections.
But a
police source told our correspondent that Abubakar’s fate would be decided by
the President and the Nigeria Police Council, which comprises the President,
the state governors, the Inspector-General of Police and the Chairman of the
Police Service Commission.
The
source said there was already a plan to ensure that the NPC, which confirmed
Abubakar as the substantive IG on July 12, 2012, also approve the planned
extension of the IG’s tenure.

ReplyDeleteTo enable him rig election for Jonathan . Jonathan should understand that Nigerians are wiser than 2011 . Any attempt to rig 2015 election will be utterly resisted. Majority of Nigerians are tired of Jonathan and are no longer interested in him. He should go back to Utuoke . We don't need an ogogoro man as our president anymore.

DeleteThis Man is the worst IG Nigeria will ever have, he pretend to be a discinpline and not corrupt officer. If u re in d system u will know what I'm talking about. He deducted. 11 thousand each from every police officer salary for two months with out good reasons when he was confronted by the press about it , he said that d money has been returned to the officers which he never did as I'm speaking now. He mounted his boys all over the places who collect bribe with inpunity and said go to anywhere and report them nothing will happen. Go to festac in Lagos one of his boy is there ACP Dan Okoro. If u want know the truth ask from the people in that town they will collaborate this story. Pls for the sake and interest of having a good police force that can serve a better Nigeria. People like AIG Solomon Ariase, AIG Mike Zokoumo and many brainlliant oficers are out there to pilot d affairs of d Nigeria police.
