A former Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim
Coomassie, was yesterday announced the new Chairman of the Arewa
Consultative Forum (ACF) while the former Military Administrator of Kebbi
State, Col. John Ubah (rtd), emerged the Secretary-General of the apex northern
socio-cultural organisation.
According
to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), while delivering the ACF report, the
outgoing Secretary-General, Col. Shehu Musa (rtd), explained that the
organisation had been involved in some of the initiatives of the federal
government, which were aimed at mitigating the security challenges in the
North.
It
was speculated at the weekend that
Coomassie would emerge the new ACF chairman.
The
outgoing Secretary General said in the report, “The ACF, being the foremost pan
northern socio-cultural organisation, has been involved in some of the
initiatives of the federal government which are aimed at mitigating the security
challenges facing the North.
“At
a point, the insurgency escalated in the North-east and the federal government
realised that the use of military might alone was not enough to solve the
crisis and people were calling on the government to have dialogue with the
insurgents, the federal government appointed a committee under the Minister of
Special Duties and once again a representative of ACF was nominated to the
committee.
“The
effort of our forum towards promoting peace and unity in the country neither
stops with providing consultancy for the federal government nor with
participation in committees commissioned by government. As part of our mandate,
we initiated certain programmes which were aimed at promoting peaceful
co-existence in our communities.”
