The Supreme Court of Nigeria, Friday morning quashed
the conviction of a Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, Bode George by a Lagos
High Court.
The apex court, in discharging and acquitting George,
stated that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had no evidence
that he committed fraud at the Nigeria Port Authority (NPA) as alleged.
According to the judges led by John Afolabi Fabiyi
JSC, the charges of “contract splitting” filed against George was unknown to
the law.
The judgement, which no doubt will raise more dust
from anti-corruption activists and Nigerians, was not unexpected as the
politician himself once said his conviction would be overruled.
