FRSC Postpones Annual Lecture Over Mandela

The management of the Federal Road Safety Commission has postponed this year’s edition of the FRSC Annual Lecture Series, earlier slated for this week Wednesday, 11 December, 2013 at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Abuja, with the theme: “Safer Roads: A 21st Century Development Challenge”.

According to the Corps Public Education Officer, Corps Commander Jonas Agwu, the postponement was necessitated by the demise of the African icon, Dr Nelson Mandela, who died on Friday last week in South Africa and the engagement of some key stakeholders for the lecture, in his the burial rites.

This year’s edition of the FRSC annual lecture, which was to be delivered by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President, Republic of Ghana as guest speaker, was structured to focus on developmental challenges confronting safer roads in Africa as part of measures to stimulate public discourse and action on the developmental challenges towards realizing set goals for safer roads in the African continent.

Speaking further, Jonas added other events lined up for the annual lecture such as the command performance of Prof. Wole Soyinka’s play, ‘The Trial of Brother Jero’ , in honour of the Ghanaian President; also scheduled for the same date, has also been postponed.

In view of this development, the Federal Road Safety Corps regrets any inconveniences this postponement might have caused its invited guests and stakeholders even as a new date will be announced in due course.

It would be recalled that the Former Secretary of Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku was guest speaker at the inaugural edition of the FRSC annual lecture series in 2009 with the theme: “Sustainable Development and Road Safety” while the National President of International Road Federation, KK Kapila was guest speaker at the 2010 edition on “Decade of Action on Road Safety: Imperatives for Developing Economies”.

Other previous speakers include the Adjutant Professor in Transport Engineering and Injury Prevention at the La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, Prof. Richard Tay in 2011, with theme: “ Achieving the Decade of Action on Road Safety: 2011-2020” and last year’s theme was “ Safe and Sustainable Transportation: Lesson for Nigeria” with the President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Association (AAMVA), Neil Schuster as guest speaker.
