Chairman Pointer NUJ at the Church Service |
In line with its increasingly rich tradition of heaving up
issues critical to the Nigerian project onto the public domain, The Pointer
chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), will tomorrow (Tuesday,
October 29, 2013), metaphorically illuminate Asaba, seat of Delta State, with
its annual lecture for the year. It will dwell on the search for a new Revenue
Allocation Formula (RAF) and the Nigerian Project, with the under-pin of the
role of the mass media in that direction. A statement to this effect issued by
Comrades Fidelis Egugbo (Chapel NUJ chairman); Mrs Lucky Ubiebor (Planning
Committee Chairman) and Cletus Ngwodo (Planning Committee Secretary) said the
lecture will begin by 11 am at Chad-Ef Hotels, by Inter Bau Roundabout, Asaba.
The lecture, the third in the series to be held by the chapel NUJ, is to be
delivered by Hon. Evelyn Oboro, a high-visibility and proactive member of the
House of Representatives, the lower chamber of Nigeria’s bicameral legislature.
Hon. Oboro, the first female legislator of Urhobo ethnic extraction is to illuminate
the topic at the event that is expected to draw a motley crowd of participants
from all walks of life. In x-raying the topic, Hon. Oboro, an increasingly
quintessential politician and member of at least six strategic House committees
of the lower chamber of the National Assembly, is expected to present to the
public domain the factors underlying the increasingly strident calls for a
far-fetched review of the RAF, which legion interests say is heavily tilted in
favour of the Federal Government. The subsisting RAF devotes 52.7 per cent to
the Federal Government (FG), and 26.7 per cent and 20.6 per cent respectively
to all 36 state governments and the 774-constitutionally-recognised local
governments in the country.
Tomorrow’s annual lecture is to hold under the
auspices of the chairmanship of High Chief Tom Egbuwoku, former member of the
House of Representatives and an erstwhile member of the Commonwealth
Parliamentary Association (CPA). Last year’s edition of the lecture series was
delivered by Prof Demas Nwoko, world-renowned authority on Architecture: it
dwelt on the critical issue of Constitution Review and the Role of the Mass
Media. The foundation lecture, held in 2011, addressed the issue of insecurity
in the country and the vital place of the press in the horde of responsorial
actions. It was given by Abuja-based top-flight Chartered Accountant and
security affairs expert, Chief Ken Olise. Tomorrow’s lecture is to be preceded
by the humanitarian visit to hospitals in Asaba by the chapel NUJ, during which
presentations-gifts are to be presented to patients/nursing mothers. The week
commenced yesterday with a Thanksgiving Service held at the St. Philip's
Anglican Church, Asaba and it was well attended by Journalists and friends of
Journalists. The media week is a core element of the calendarial activities of
the chapel, which also holds annual children’s party on May 27and Democracy and
Fitness Walk on May 29. A deep-seated dinner, involving chapel members, their
friends and other stakeholders, caps the week every year. This year’s dinner is
scheduled for Friday, November 1, 2013, by 6.30 pm.
