AS the protracted strike by the Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU) entered the 106th day, some women protesters
stormed the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, on Monday, demanding
immediate resolution of the impasse.
The women, led by members of
the National Association of Market Women (NAMW), carried placards with
various inscriptions: “Enough is enough ”, “Our children must go back to
school”, “FG/ASUU must resolve the strike now.”
The women besieged the entrance
gate to the ministry for several hours.
The protest came just as a
non-governmental organisation with interest in research in education, Eduwatch
Consults and Research Centre, Abuja, called on President Goodluck
Jonathan to summon the leadership of ASUU to a meeting in the Villa, in
order to personally mediate in the crisis.
However, the Federal Government
has expressed hope that the prolonged strike by ASUU will soon come to an
end.
Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry
of Education, Dr Mac-John Nwaobiala, who stated this while addressing the
protesters over the prolonged strike by ASUU, said government rose from a
meeting with ASUU leadership last week that ended on a positive note.
Dr Nwaobiala stressed that the
concern by the market women was not a surprise in view of their position as
mothers to the students who have been with them at home for nearly four months
now.
He urged them to be patient with
government and asked them to calm their wards to do same; expressing optimism
that the issue would soon be resolved.
Earlier, the national president
of the market women association, Chief (Mrs) Felicia Sani,
said the women could no longer bear the prolonged strike which she
described as politically motivated.
Sani said as mothers, they were
worried that their children had been at home without hope of returning to
school to continue with their studies.

Dat is stupid statement 4rm dat mrs Sanni dat it is politically motivated, she shud keep quiet even she is eating 4rm d federal government bcause of been market women leaders she shud stop saying nonsense is it politics 4 people to fight 4 what is right it is bcause we don't fight 4 wat is right in dis country dat is y d country is so bad as it is wit corruption every where no eletric light no gud roads no security there is unemployement aviation is rotten n waste lot of lives every tin is just going bad in d country and yet someone is still desperate to continue governing Nigeria beyond 2015 despite he is so corrupt n lack d quality of been a good president & ruler & a leader
ReplyDeleteRaphael let me you. Do you have a mother?
DeleteRaphael let me ask you do you have a mother ? And what do you know about good leadership ?
DeleteWht do u mean? must u use dat abusive word, she jst spoke her mind n u r saying urs wht different does dat make.Talking abt governance I tell u it is nt easy whn there is no peace, it doesn't gv anybody d chance to think straight,I don't blame d man too many problems at d same tym,he is nt getting enough support. Come to think of it,if u can recall bck since he became d president he has nt known peace jst as Buhari sown he will make sure he frustrates him n his governance, then d issue of boko haram started from one problem to another politicians fighting each here n there so wht do u expect from a country dat doesn't gv full support to their president whn ideas is meant to b shared on how to move d nation forward.Greedy is another problem facing d nation if we can understd dat politics is nt a do or die affair in dis country n nt a famly affair den thinks will turn out better.
ReplyDeleteGuy bone! No be dat one..if to say Good boy Johnny get him own fault for the matter. Being a former lecturer he shld understand where it hurts the lecturers and education in this country as a whole but see wot we are getting... Well maybe if he sits wit the lecturers and speaks wit them himself a better resolution to the matter cld be reached instead of sending third parties who may harbor selfish interests... Abi wetin una think.
ReplyDeleteOur top leaders are d problem, non of their children is in Nigeria university, they take dem abroad to study.how do u want them to feel dis pain of asuu strike.but I knw it will soon b an history.
ReplyDeletei congratulate those women for that action. Love it.
ReplyDeleteOh yes it was a right decision but even after that demonstration can the FG/ASUU agree. Please let enough be enough!
ReplyDeleteYes, I agreed with Madam Sani, it is politics, if not, why not. All the problem Raphael had just mention had been with us since the coming of Nigeria. So, you want it to vanish over night because somebody you do not like is there. In short to be sincere with ourselves, ASSU and Universities School Authority are part of Nigeria problem. They cannot account for internal generated revenues, corruption started in Nigeria universities, we have not forget money for grade and sex for grade. The so-called corrupt politicians are products of Nigeria Universities, that is rubbish in rubbish out. ASSU want to earn like politicians, for me that is greed when you are not a politician. If that is the case, resign and join politics and take the risk and pay the cost of getting there, then you start earning like politician. These are Lectures who have been drumming morality and character are now rooting for primitive accumulation. They should know it not only education we have in this country, other sectors too need fund. What is the essence of quality education when one graduate and cannot get jobs because other sectors are sick. In fact, they should run back to their class room or resign to allow other qualify Nigeria Lectures who are not working to get job. It is not logical for employee to fix salary for it employer. And I think the honourable thing for Lecturers to do if they are not satisfy with the condition of our Universities is to resign as in civilized society, if all of them resign, Nigeria Govt. will take them serious than hold the Nigeria to ransom because some body want to accumulate wealth at all cost. They should forget about trillion they are demanding, cause they cannot get it and no one can force development over night, it is all about growth and process and time, and with time Nigeria Universities with get there because our Universities cannot developed in isolation, the development of our school has to be consummate with the level of our development as people and Nation in general.
