17 Fake Corpers Arrested By ICPC In Abuja

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has arrested 17 fake youth corps members at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp, Kubwa, Abuja.

A statement from the Resident Consultant on Media in the commission, Mr Folu Olamiti, made available to News men disclosed that the feat was achieved on Thursday when suspects were posing and taking pictures outside the camp during the passing-out ceremonies.

He said ICPC operatives stormed the NYSC orientation camp based on intelligence reports and effected the arrest of the suspects made up of eight females and nine males.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that 15 of the fake corpers claimed to have enrolled in degree courses run by consultancy services in the following institutions: University of Calabar (six), University of Jos (six), Ebonyi State University (one), Federal University of Technology, Owerri (one) and Crown Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti (1).

“One of the other two fake corpers never attended any university, but said she was desirous of getting a discharge certificate. The other, a young man, impersonated his sister, a genuine corps member currently receiving medical treatment abroad, in order to collect her discharge certificate,” Olamiti explained.

He added that the commission’s chairman, Mr Ekpo Nta, had been warning stakeholders, particularly parents of students seeking admission to ensure that their children are admitted into courses that had been duly accredited.

“The ICPC chairman, Mr Ekpo Nta, has at various public forum warned parents, guardians and young students seeking admission to universities and other tertiary institutions to ensure that their proposed courses are approved by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) and other regulatory bodies.
