The All Progressives Congress (APC) have, on Saturday in Kaduna, reiterated
their resolve to form government at state and national levels come 2015.
The
chieftains who met at a function organised by the Movement for a Better Future,
included Malam Nasir El-Rufai, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau, Col. Hameed Ibrahim
Ali, Hajiya Hafsat Baba, General Jafaru Isa(rtd) among others.
Former
governor of Kano State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau said his assessment of the
state of the nation at the moment was that it was “very unfortunate.”
According
to him, “the constitution of the country lists the issue of security of lives
and property as the number one priority of government. Therefore, any
government that has failed to provide security of lives and property is below
average and in fact, is a failure. So, my assessment is that the government is
a total failure. It is not about projects as I have said, but about the
wellbeing and safety of the people.”
Commenting
on the threat of Vice President Namadi Sambo who hails from the Northwest zone,
he said “we have come a very long way. It is not about where you come from or
what office you occupy. Of course, it is common knowledge that the Vice
President belongs to the wrong group. That he is from the Northwest does not
give us any threat. In fact as far as the Northwest is concerned, it is a walk
over for the APC. Go and check the records.
El-Rufai
who spoke on behalf of Chief Bisi Akande, interim national chairman of the APC,
said the national executive of the party had issued guidelines for the setting
up of harmonisation committees in the various states.
“The
harmonisation committees are not caretaker or interim committees, but just
harmonisation committees. The objective is to ensure the fusion of the three
legacy parties into one political party. They are to ensure that meetings take
place at all levels. By next week, we hope to finish work on the harmonisation
committees for them to start work right away.
“I
also want to appeal to all party members to desist from making any comment or
giving any impression that leaders have been selected for the APC in any state
because no leader has emerged yet. The leaders of the party will emerge from
the harmonisation committees who will hold forth for about two months while we
register members before holding congresses where elected leaders will emerge.
Our intention is to have the national convention latest by January 2014,” he
said.
