ADDRESS BY THE VICE PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS, (NUJ), ZONE C,
SOUTH-EAST, DEACON CHRIS ISIGUZO DURING A PRESS CONFERENCE ON THE 2ND
SOUTH-EAST MEDIA SUMMIT AT NUJ PRESS CENTRE, AWKA, ANAMBRA STATE ON FRIDAY
SEPTEMBER 6, 2013.
South-East Media
Summit is an annual event initiated by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ),
South-East zone as part of our social responsibility. It serves as a forum
where media practitioners interface with different arms of the government, the
civil society and the private sector operators.
The aim is to
create a robust forum where issues that bother on good governance, media
practice and investment as well as the nation’s democratisation process are
discussed with a view to creating an improved atmosphere and environment for
the general wellbeing of the people.
One of the expected
outcomes of the summit is a mobilisation of captains of industry as well as
other relevant stakeholders to invest in the media industry in the south-east
so as to give the people a voice.
The Union also uses
the period of the summit to recognise some personalities that have
distinguished themselves in their chosen vocations.
After a successful
maiden edition at Gregory University, Uturu, Abia state that attracted the
crème-de la crème of the society including the governors of the states of the
zone, members of the National Assembly, members of the Federal Executive
Council, private sector operators, the union was encouraged to make it an
annual event and it is expected that this year’s event would record greater
success.
Accordingly, some
notable Nigerians, including the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike
Ekweremadu, Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Prof
Bartho Okolo, former Minister of Power, Prof Barth Nnaji, President of Nigeria
Guild of Editors, Femi Adesina, President of Federation of African Journalists
(FAJ), Garba Mohammed, former among others have indicated interest to
participate in this year’s summit.
Specifically, Prof
Nnaji will deliver the keynote lecture on this year’s theme “The Role of the Media in South-East
Integration”, while the chairman of the senate committee on Gas, Senator
Nkechi Nwaogu will chair the event billed to take place at the Nike Lake Hotels, Enugu on September 20,
2013.
The zone will use
the opportunity to recognise some prominent Igbo sons and daughters who have
distinguished themselves in different areas of human endeavours. They are:

(2) Senator
Chris Anyanwu, Imo
(3) Chief Onyemuche
Nnamani, Enugu
(4) Mr. Dave
Nwachukwu, Ebonyi
(5) Rt. Hon.
Ude Oko Chukwu, Abia
The Deputy Senate
President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu will serve as the Chief Guest of Honour,
while the five governors of the states in the zone will serve as Special Guests
of Honour. The NUJ National President, Mallam Mohammed Garba will lead other
media stakeholders to the event.
It is hoped that
the summit will produce a communiqué that will come out of the event will be
presented to the south-east leaders including the governors as a blueprint for
economic, social and political advancement of the zone.
