STATEMENT of PROF. BIMPE ABOYADE - September 27, 2013
On Tuesday, 17 September 2013, around 12.30 p.m, a hired thug named Jayeoba climbed over the walls of the premises of the Development Policy Centre (DPC) of which Professor Bimpe Aboyade is the Chairman and Chief Executive. The thug came with a knife and on sighting him, the day watch (Moses) of DPC accosted him. The thug then pounced on DPC daywatch who shouted to a visiting friend of his (Osuolale) for help. Together, they wrestled Jayeoba to the ground. Jayeoba managed to free himself and ran to the main office of the Centre, damaged the entrance door and wounded the Administrative Assistant inside and shouting that he had been sent to kill me, Bimpe Aboyade. By that time, I had run out of the office, but Jayeoba pursued me until he caught up with me across the road and in front of the house of Pastor Olubi Johnson, where several policemen had already gathered. By the grace of God as he was about to put his knife on my neck, a policeman pulled me away from Jayeoba’s grip while he continued to shout to everyone’s hearing that they should allow him to kill ‘the Iya’ and finish the work he had been sent to do by his employers, Mr. Taiwo and Mr. Kolawole Carew.
When Jayeoba grabbed me, Bimpe Aboyade, only his left hand was bleeding from the encounter he had with our daywatch and his friend, before he was wrestled to the ground. But by the time he called those who have sent him, his shirt was soaked with his own blood, through self-inflicted wounds in front of policemen and others present at the scene. Thereupon, those who sent him, Mr. Taiwo and Mr. Kolawole Carew started taking video photographs to show his bloody shirt.
There were more than ten policemen from the Agodi Police Station who were at the scene, but surprisingly they were unable to arrest him and put him in their van for close to one hour. Two DPC staff members and a visitor to DPC who had been wounded were also taken to the Agodi Police Station for questioning. But to the surprise of everyone, the DPC staff members were clamped into detention while Jayeoba the thug and those who sent him were left off by the Police.
On Friday 20 September, I Professor Bimpe Aboyade was invited to the CID, Iyaganku to make my own statement on the matter in the morning and was kept there without any reason till evening. Late in the evening, I was ordered by the 2IC officer (a woman) to be detained in a cell for criminals. When I asked for explanation, I was rough handled by two women police officers on the order of the 2IC’s office in an effort to carry me by force into the cell. In the process, I fell down and experienced what seemed like a heart attack. In spite of my condition, the two police women, now aided by the 2IC, with the AC looking on, started dragging me on the floor in order to get me into the cell. I asked that a doctor be called but nobody paid attention.
After about one hour of my lying prostrate on a wet floor, I was then asked to sign a paper in which I saw that I was already charged with the crime of attempted murder, along with my staff members who had been detained for some three days.
It is amazing that it was the following morning after already charging me with attempted murder that the policemen at CID Iyaganku actually went to the premises of the Development Policy Centre to investigate the crime scene.
Thus, I and my members of staff at the Development Policy Centre were turned into accused persons, while Jayeoba the thug and Mr. Taiwo and Mr. Kolawole Carew who sent him were made the complainants! It should be noted that the thug, Jayeoba had been sent to our premises with dangerous weapons on several occasions since March 2013 and had even burglarised our main office. All these I had reported to the DPC and Area Commander at Agodi and Ikolaba Police Stations. But anytime he was arrested for these crimes, he was always set immediately free by the police and to appear on our premises at the DPC, the very next day with impunity. And if he had any accomplices at anytime, it was only the accomplice that was locked up, just for show and charged to court for burglary as it happened on 17 July 2013.
I hereby plead with the authorities in the land for justice and protection from untimely death by hired thugs and assassins.
