EBONYI State Police Ccommand, said,
yesterday, that it had released the nine operatives of Federal Road Safety
Corps, FRSC, arrested over alleged involvement in the assault of a Deputy
Commissioner of Police, DCP, Istahifanus Shettima, in Abakaliki.
It will be recalled that the
suspects, who were rounded up at Presco roundabout, along Enugu-Abakaliki
expressway, were also accused of obstructing traffic without adhering strictly
to the ethics of their profession.
Those arrested were Agwatu Ifeanyi,
Chime Charles, Eugene Ozoamusi, Otu Onyinyechukwu, Chidi Anthony Ude, Okoye
Daniel Chidozie, Egede Sunday, Ochiabuto Joseph and Collins Anidiobi.
The incident, which led to the
impounding of three vehicles, with number plates AR 609 FKJ Lagos, AA 905 NKE
Ebonyi and AO 419 RS, belonging to the corps, attracted a team of policemen who
came to the rescue of the DCP.
Briefing newsmen on the development,
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Sylvester Igbo, who stated that both
agencies were never at loggerheads in the past, revealed that the
accident between a tricycle and
motorcycle with number plates AKL 041 GD and QB 764 SM respectively, was
what led to the conflict.
He said: “The Deputy
Commissioner of Police who was in the traffic with his official car and
personnel, directed the FRSC personnel to accompany the victims of the accident
to the Motor Traffic Division, MTD, Abakaliki, to give his statement as a
witness and for the treatment of the injured victims but he refused and
hauled abuses as well as assaulted him.
“Even when the corps personnel
acceded to the directive, while on their way, other personnel of the corps used
their vehicle to double cross the DCP which nearly resulted in an accident.”
Meanwhile, the new sector Commander
of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Ebonyi State, Taiwo Eseyin, stated that
the matter had been resolved as both agencies were working in the common
interest of all Nigerians.
