A section of the balcony of one storey buildings in
Government Secondary School (GSS) Nyanya, Abuja, collapsed on Friday, injuring
some students.
It was gathered that about eight
students were injured in the incident.
According to an eyewitness, about
eight students sustained various degrees of injuries in the incident.
According to an eye witness at the scene,a student fell head down when the
incident took place.
The injured students were taken to
the Maitama General Hospital, treated and discharged.
Confirming the incident, the public
relations officer of FCT Education Secretariate, Mr Tony Ogunleye, disclosed
that the secretariat took care of the hospital bills.
He said the victims, numbering about
six were leaning on the balcony when it gave way.
According to him, there were no
casualty from the incident.
He said, “There were no casualties at
all but a few minor injuries.
“The affected students have been treated
already. They were treated at the Maitama General Hospital.
“It was just the balcony that gave
way. The students were leaning on it and it gave way.
Meanwhile, the minister of the
Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed has directed the
Department of Development Control to carry out further investigation into the
incident , to identify the cause.
The principal of the school, Mrs.
Ngozi Ezeh, had disclosed that the students were leaning on the hand railing of
the cantilevered canopy above the main entrance measuring 1.2x1.5m when it gave
way.
Despite offering the explanation, the
minister ordered further investigation and directed that the one-storey block
of classrooms be sealed off.
