A three-storey
building at 16, Alli Street, Tinubu, Lagos Island, collapse on Wednesday night,
killing three of its occupants and injuring many others.
Eyewitnesses said that
the building collapsed on a bungalow beside it at 10:30pm, adding that two
persons were brought out dead in the early hours of yesterday.
The source said
that the dismembered remains of the third casualty were picked up later in the
day by members of the Lagos State Collapsed Buildings Rescue Team.
It was also learnt
that the injured persons were reportedly rushed to the Emergency Unit of the
Lagos Island General Hospital, where some of them were still receiving
treatment.
On a visit to the
scene, Rescue Team and civil defence team were trying to recover more bodies
believed to be trapped in the debris.
Also present were
men of Lagos State Civil Defence, and the Lagos State Hospital Emergency teams.
One of the
residents, Bisiriyu Oluwaseun Anotu, a 500 Level Business Administration
student of the Lagos State University, Ikoyi Campus, who lived on an apartment
on the last floor of the building, said “I rushed down only to see what used to
be our home in shambles.
“Although we were
served notice to vacate the building in August by the Lagos State Government on
the ground that the building was not save for habitation, most of us stayed
because we had nowhere else to go to, moreover our rent was still running.”
At press time, the
whereabouts of the building’s developer, identified as Chief Toulet, was not
known
