Three people are now in the police net in Jigawa State in
connections with the five dead bodies of children found on a street at Gwaram
town, headquarters of Gwaram Local Government Area of the state in the earlier
hours of Wednesday.
Report from the state indicated that
the five children were under 15 years and from two families. They were seen on
the street in the town at around 5.00 a.m. when people in the area came out
from the mosque after early morning prayers.
The name of the children were given
as Basiru Malam Inusa, 12; Mansur Mallam Inusa,12; Rabi’u Abubakar, 13; Buhari
Abubakar, 10 and Bashir Inusa, 11 years respectively.
A resident of the area, who prefered
anonymity, told the Nigerian Tribune that the residents, as usual, after eating
their meals in prepation for the next fasting, came across the corpses.
According to him, “we came out to
observe the morning prayers and we noticed the kids and attempts were made to
wake them up. We were shocked to discover that they were all dead.”
He stated further that “their death
might not be unconnected with food poisoning, since all of them were
‘almajirais’ that are residing in one of the houses at the old Gwaram town.”
When contacted, the Jigawa State
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abdu Jinjiri, confirmed the
incident, saying, “we received a report from our Gwaram division that five
copses were seen on the street of Gwaram this morning.
“Our men rushed to the scene and took
the corpses to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) for post-mortem examination,
and as I’m talking to you now, there is no report available.”
He said the police were treating the
case as that of an unnatural death, but would brief journalists on the outcome
of the test.
He, however, confirmed that three
people had been invited by the police for questioning.
