Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd) on
Friday said he decided to retire with his current rank in 1985, to defend and
promote the integrity of the military, instead of promoting himself.
The former Head of State made the
statement at a public presentation of two books: “Nigerian military in
politics, 1966-2011 and politics of transition to civil rule in Nigeria” in
Zaria, Kaduna State.
The books were published by
Malam Nuhu Ramalan, Head of Political Science Department, Federal College Education
(FCE), Zaria.
“It was the conviction of our regime
that, being the Head of State and Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, it
does not mean that you are the overall General.
“My ultimate goal as at then was to
ensure the integrity, justice, equity, accountability and transparency in the
system. That was why I did away with unnecessarily promoting myself to
General,” he said.
Speaking on the military in politics,
Buhari, the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC)
in the 2011 general elections, identified some weaknesses of the past military
regime to include corruption and abuse of office.
On politics, Buhari said the
incessant military interventions were due to the failure of politicians to
respect the rule of law, “characterised by massive corruption and lack of
accountability”.
The Chairman of the occasion and
former Secretary-General of the defunct Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Malam
Aliyu Umar, said the books would be resource materials in the study of
Nigerian politics.
“The two books are reflection of the
present Nigerian political scenario,” he said. (NAN)

ReplyDeleteWhy can't we see the good in someone at least for once? Buhari just told us why he didn't promote himself to a General when he had the chance. Instead of us appreciating him for that singular honour and respect for rule of law, we are insulting him. O personally don't like Buhari. Don't even need him again as President no matter what he stands for. But for goodness sake, let us not insult him for saying he did something honourable in the past. Let us learn how to apprecaite something good in someone no matter the hate we may feel for the person.
ReplyDeleteThank u , we keep condemning pole meanwhile we are the worst.
ReplyDeleteWhether he promoted himself to a general or not doesn't make any difference. The fact remains that he carried out a coup, he aborted a democratically elected govt and established an illegitimate govt. What rule of law is he talking about, does the military respect rule rule of law? Promotion or no promotion you can never have the opportunity of leading this country again. Form as many parties as you want but you will not smell aso rock. When you're done losing with APC you're welcome to form another party bad loser. Meanwhile you can't do worse than the boko haram you've unleashed on this country.

ReplyDeleteFor God sake, we need to talk with our brain and not just with our mouth. If you think Nigeria is not well govern, then let try another school of thought than just sticking to this PDP system that has no idea of what democracy is trully about. Southwest state convinced me that Democracy is better alternative to military rule. For the first time in the history of our generation, I felt governance in the society
