The House of Representatives Committee on Power, on
Tuesday, blamed the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for Economy,
Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, for the darkness enveloping the country, due to the downward
trend in power generation.
Okonjo-Iweala, according to the
committee, should apologise to Nigerians over the irregular power supply in the
country, which, it said, was due to the non-release of money allocated to the
power sector.
Chairman, House Committee on Power,
Patrick Ikheriale, during a meeting with the Ministry of Power, Bureau of
Public Enterprises (BPE), Distribution Companies (DISCOS), Generating Companies
(GENCOS) and Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), expressed concern over the
situation.
Ikheriale said the House was
concerned on the downward trend in the power generation and supply, adding that
this made it to mandate a joint committee on power, commercialisation and two
others to investigate the issue.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of
Power, Mr Godknows Igali, in his presentation, said there would soon be an
improvement in the sector.
“We have the capacity to generate
7000 megawatts, government is not retrenching any worker because of the
privatisation policy. For today, over 4000 megawatts are being generated, but
over 2000 megawatts are stranded, due to inability to transmit them.
“The rainy season is also a challenge
to us, it is not peculiar to Nigeria,” he said.
Igali revealed that over N1.7 billion
had been earmarked for the take-off of Mambila power generation.

ReplyDeleteSimply put "Ngozi has refused has refused to release money for you guys to squander" hopeless law makers
ReplyDeleteWhat a load of rubbish!! I am very upset now... Will her releasing money make the power sector better, OR, will it end up in the legislators pockets? Senseless legislators. Madam, well done; u are doing a good job; keep it up. Do what u have to do. Please, keep the interest of the poor Nigerians at heart; not the bickering of some rabble-rousing legislators, who are only after their own selfish braggadocio. Nonsense, please.

ReplyDeletefrom they are against her means she does not agree with looting. they bunch of crooks. am advanced in age now and they light has been bad, sister Ngozi was not always there but you got all the money you requested, which ended in your pockets
ReplyDeleteAm not in support of any money being giving to the power sector again in this country. What have they done with the ones given to them and what are they doing with the bills that they collect always though no power. They have refused the give people pre-paid meters and give bills as if sprading dust on people. Let each sector in Nigeria produces money its runing.
