CAN President To Lead Protest Over Early Child Marriage

President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, on Tuesday said he would lead Nigerians to protest against the Senate resolution to amend Section 29 (4) (b) of the 1999 Constitution under which married underage girls are deemed to be adults.
The association also frowned on the comment credited to former Governor of Zamfara State Ahmed Yerima that the proposal for the deletion of the section contravened Islamic Law.
Oritsejafor,  in a statement, described Yerima’s argument as offensive, saying, “It presupposes that Nigeria, a secular state, is populated only by Muslims.”
The CAN President, who urged the Senate to revisit the child marriage issue, also called on Nigerians to reject the resolution which he described as provocative and dehumanising.
He said, “By the grace of God, I will, personally mobilise Nigerians and lead the street protest against this oppressive and dehumanising resolution. Why would the Senate, after voting recoil, simply because of a point of order premised on religious basis?
“We, Christians, also have Canon Law, which frowns on marriage of girls who are not of age. Christianity abhors such marriages. The protest will be soon.
“Finally, I urge the Yerimas in the Senate to toe the path of the Holy Qur’an, which states that one who kills a person unjustly in effect has killed everyone and one who saves another has saved everyone. They should save these girls and Nigerians the agony of having their children married off at ages below 18 by unfavourable legislations.”
Oritsejafor noted that Yerima’s latest comment would stir up another controversy in the country.
Yerima as a governor introduced the controversial Sharia, the Islamic Legal code, in Zamfara State.
According to Oritsejafor, people like Yerima are approaching Qur’anic teachings from extremes and disturbing the balance.
“It makes me wonder the source of the emotions and thoughts that nurture them,” he said.
The CAN President said as a Senator, whose case of marrying a 13-year-old Egyptian girl was still fresh in the memory of Nigerians, Yerima should “only be seen and not heard in matters of this nature”.
He added, “If now Yerima is commenting on a case in which he has interest, it can only mean the action of a man frenziedly trying to get himself out of the hook through some undeserved legislations. I appeal to those individuals who have been educated along this line in the Senate not to use their rights as lawmakers to harm children below the age of 18, but to choose the interest of these children above their own.
“These girls should be allowed to develop, individually because this resolution, if implemented, would hound girls below 18 years into marriages they know nothing about. This is only one dimension of this tragic resolution.

“I feel that when individuals attain a certain way of thinking and understanding and reach certain status in life, they should be able to comprehend that it is necessary to adhere to conventions in line with best practices the world over and not harm other members of society, no matter their ages within the same society.”

  5. Am so surprise that the Nigeria Senate has nothing good to delibrate on, no light, no good road, no good drinking water, no good security, some family cannot afford three square meal a day. Instead of them to delibrate on how to make sure that the counrty can provide all what I have mentioned. Tax payers money are used for for something which is not important.

  8. Oga CAN president pls what of this!!! Randy Pastor Arrested In Policeman's Bedroom While He Was Trying To Have Sex With Policeman's Wife
A 50-year-old pastor of one of the pentecostal churches in Nigeria was yesterday arrested in a mobile police officer's bedroom at Iyaba Umudim, Nnewi in Anambra State.

He was allegedly trying to make love to the policeman's wife. Unknowing to the pastor, the policeman was lying in wait for him.

The suspect, a father of four from Ngwa in Abia State was said to have been making love advances to the policeman's wife as the two families lived in the same building and the woman had always rejected.

It was gathered that the woman had always told the randy pastor to let her alone each time he tried to seduce her even though the pastor was said to have promised her N50, 000 for a start if she allowed him have sex with her.

Also, the woman always relayed the pastor's advances to her husband who asked her to play along with the pastor.

The pastor's alleged sin caught up with him yesterday when he called the woman's husband, serving with Mopol 29, Awka on phone at about 4:00pm asking him whether he would return to Nnewi after work and the policeman told him (the pastor) that he had a special assignment in Asaba, Delta State.

The police officer said: "The pastor apparently happy started praying for me that God would protect me in my journey, and all that, and I said Amen, but he did not know that I was already in Nnewi when I answered his call."

The police officer said he later secretly returned to his house having arranged with his wife to catch the randy man. At the wee hours, according to him, he 'laid ambush' in his bedroom waiting for the pastor's next action.

"It was around 2:23am when the pastor came and we left the sitting room open. He tiptoed into the sitting room with only his trousers and singlet on him, coming bare-footed and sat down in the palour.

"He called my wife who came out from the bedroom to welcome him. Minutes after, he requested that he and my wife should go into the bedroom and he was ushered in. He flashed his torchlight in the bedroom and appeared to have a premonition as my wife went back to luck the door at the sitting room. Then he had taken his position on the bed and suddenly, I came out from my hiding place in the bedroom and gripped him and a fight ensued.

"He gave me several bites on my left arm and fingers. By then the fight had taken us to the sitting room where my plasma television, handset and other property were destroyed in his struggle to free himself. If not for other sympathizers who were attracted to the noise he would not have been over powered," the policeman recounted.

He said members of the vigilance group were later invited as the pastor pleaded for forgiveness attributing his action to the work of the devil and promised to pay for the damaged property and any amount of money for him to be set free and the incident concealed.

He was, however, taken to Nnewi Central Police Station for further investigation.

Contacted, the Anambra State police image-maker, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka said he had not been briefed on the incident.

  13. A prostitute is a prostitute pls, she shouldn't use her inability to marry early as an excuse to sleep wit a thousand men.its her choice to hv multitude sex partners ok. I hv friends who r 37 and still single that did not mk them wayward.Prostitution is in every tribe, tongue and religion. I hv friends in d North who r learned, non of them married a baby for a wife I can confidently tell u this and they won't give out their kids in marriage at 13yrs cos they r all in sch and won't stop at anything less than TTC. Its poverty that make sm people give out their kids at that tender age. Have u asked urself wat can be done to curb the spate of diseses in d North, all the married babies when the have health issues, majority are abandoned by the so called (father)husbands who in turn moves on to marry another baby blinding their parents with money. Allow dis girls get an education,go to other arab/muslim countries and see how they live. Poverty in Northan Nigeria won't allow people speak the truth. Kids are given birth to and abandoned on d street as Almajiris wat r they doing to better their lot all they can debate is child marriage. What a shame! If the Muslims want that so be it, but it shouldn't be made constitutionally right. How will a full grown man feel sleeping next to and on top of a child old enough to be his,no development, how can a child arouse a Man...I wish u cld see my face at d moment...nauseating.
