Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has condemned the
Rivers State crisis and accused Jonathan’s wife, Patience, of becoming a
tool of destabilisation with a mission to shut down the apparatus of the state.
Soyinka, at a meeting with journalists in Lagos, said it
was regrettable that Patience was giving tacit support to those opposing
Amaechi’s authority.
“Too much is too much. She is now being used to reduce the
authority of an elected governor,” he said as he described the situation in the
state as an emergency.
Although the playwright enjoined Jonathan to
intervene in the crisis in order to restore normalcy to the state Assembly and
the entire state, he fired a salvo at him: His seeming indifference led
to the pandemonium in the Assembly on Tuesday.
He said, “There is a certain way a leader can
convey certain coded messages to his followers and they will be acting
accordingly. That President Jonathan might not have openly declared support for
what is going on, his comportment, his carriage and most especially, his
silence might have indicated his meddlesomeness in the matter.”
Making a comparison between Tuesday’s incident on the
floor of the Assembly and the circumstances that led to the 12th Century
murder of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket, on the orders of King
Henry II, he warned that the crisis in Rivers might lead the
country into what he described as absolute monarchism, if not quickly checked.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, who
was at the meeting, urged Nigerians to disregard the
“illegality” being perpetuated in the Rivers Assembly.
“There is a Speaker known to everyone, while the other one
is unknown, even to the President,” he said as he called for the
removal of the state Commissioner of Police for his role in the
crisis.

ReplyDeleteSoyinka is not your father's mate. While your father was busy sleeping with prostitutes Wole Soyinka was in jail or being chased by Abacha for the sake of Nigeria. He has written more literary works globally recognised than any living Nigerian. He wdnt to jail in because he told the government of Nigeria that killing Igbos in the Biafran war wouldn't help the nation. The has done much for Nigeria, he led the effort to form the Road Safety corps, he led a street protest to demand that Yaradua cabal should should hand over to Jonathan during the conflict. He has always spoken out, and will contune to speak out against this country of shameless leaders like your fathers
DeleteThe only yoruba person that talked sense was Prof Wole Soyinka but that was before he made this statement. Right now no yoruba person makes sense 2 me any more.
ReplyDeleteIbo Boy, be informed that Soyinka went to jail for 1year in 1969 for the Igbos after he met Ojukwu in Enugu and told Gowon to abandone the idea that led to the brutal murder of 3million igbos. Soyinka was on the side of MEND when they genuinely fought the government against injustice. He has always spoken out and will always speak out, as he did during Abacha, ObJ and Yaradua. You can't wish soyinka away, he has done so much for our generation when our fathers have failed, are afraid to speak or have lied to us. I hope more young Nigerians will follow his dogged and open part. He's not rightous but has always come to equity with clean hands

ReplyDeletei think a lot of people here are deviating from the main issue and chasing shadows. this has nothing to do with barrenness-barren people also have something to offer;live that for God. ..the truth be told, what is happening in rivers state and the silence of the leadership of this country and PDP is suspicious and I think prof is only adding his voice to that of millions of concerned Nigerians to say that this is not part of the rules in the game of democracy.our president shouldn't be in a hurry to condemn what is happening in Egypt, while we have turmoil in his country.which is worst...military taking power by force from democratically elected president of Egypt or parliamentarians forcefully taking power from an elected speaker of the house?which should be condemned if the truth be told as it is?let sentiments be,let reality take over your conscience and lets be civil in our utterances concerning fellow man/woman,elders and leaders/constitutional authorities...it is biblical too, pls.
