EU Condemns Nigeria's Ban On Same Sex Marriage

Few days after the House of Representatives unanimously criminalised same-sex marriages and relationships and outlawed groups that actively support gay rights in the country, the European Union (EU) Commission warned it opposed discrimination or any form of legislation that seeks to persecute someone on the basis of sexual orientation.
The EU also stated that it opposed any restriction on freedom of expression, association and assembly, or persecution of those who defend the freedoms.
The bill, which mandates up to a 10-year prison sentence for same-sex couples who make a public display of their affection, as well as anyone advocating for gay rights, provides 14-year behind bars for gay marriages.
But in a statement, EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, Catherine Ashton, said she was concerned that Nigerian lawmakers voted to accept a bill that would criminalise same sex marriages.
She said: “I am concerned that Nigerian lawmakers have voted to accept a bill that would criminalise same sex marriage.
“The EU seeks neither to promote nor discourage same sex marriages, but has been clear it opposes discrimination or any form of legislation that seeks to persecute someone on the basis of sexual orientation.
“The EU also opposes any restrictions on freedom of expression, association and assembly, or persecution of those who defend these freedoms,” she said.

  9. If the EU truly believes in freedom of association and movement, why do they have Visa restrictions for certain citizens from certain countries?.

  10. My opinion;the EU is not saying same sex marriage is good or not or should be legalized but advise not to deprive citizens of their right to freedom of expression, association or assembly. D govt can't tell me not 2 marry who i wish 2 marry.

  11. EU can go to hell with what they feel or think abt Nigeria constitution. Who cares wether they feel concerned or not. They shld mind their business and stop adultrating our culture with their dirty ways of life. What did God say abt marriage? Or is EU greater than our God Almighty?

  13. EU my foot. What's their business with how we choose to live our lives. So far we haven't frowned on their allowing safe sex marriage, why then are they frowning @ our disallowing it? Ain't they contradicting themselves on that freedom of expression bit? Ain't we free to express our belief and live by it? So far none of our religions believe in gay rights,so EU should just shut up and let us be.
