CKN Nigerian
investigation has revealed an unwholesome working ethics going on in one of
Nigeria’s bank ECOBANK Plc.
The bank has practically
turned all its staff to human slaves with its unprecedented work ethics.
Our investigation has
shown that apart from making its staff work till the wee hours of the night, the
bank has gone forward to compulsorily ask its staff to come to work on
Saturdays and Sundays.
A certain circular CKN Nigeria
was privileged to see during the week in Abuja showed the Bank asking its some staff
to be at their desk between the hours of 11am-5pm on Saturdays and Sundays
12noon-5pm to monitor among others the use of ATM machine, system upgrading (that is taking ages to complete) etc.
This directive which we
were made to understand has been on for two years now is causing the staff
sleepless nights.
We are yet to know what
the labour Unions in Nigeria are doing about this and all efforts for CKN
Nigeria to speak to top management staff of the bank was unsuccessful as at the
time of going to press.

ECOBANK, is not the only bank in nigeria so why are there own way of banking so defferent? Is so bad.that mean that family people we not have time for D families just bcs they work in ECOBANK? Is very bad
ReplyDeleteThis report is complete nonsense! Shame on u, CKN Nigeria. Poor journalism @ it extreem. It's true that the staff members were asked to come on Saturday 4 ATM reconcilliation and not on Sunday. Only the operations managers have a training 2day. And to say it happens every wkend and has been so for 2 yrs is a misinfo. I know this bcos my wife works there. #irresposible Jounalism
ReplyDeleteOga stop yarning dust.. Its not for reconciliation, it is to monitor the atm. Operations mgrs hav training, but they r to assign their back ups to fill in for them. Ckn please visit any branch and you will get an earful
DeleteHmmmm! I wonder where ckn or whatever they call themselves got their info from. If the ATM has to be monitured this week end, it won't be done by ghosts. Am sure the bank has weekend and inconvinence allowance for involved staff members and I can assure u it doesn't happen every week and has not been on for 2yrs!
DeleteDon't say bullshit u do nt knw!! D report is right as I av a couple of peeps who wrk with dis carzy ecobank peeps!! Its rilli been going on for like 2 years nw!! Der hardly av time for demselfs and der families!!
DeleteThis is rubbish and unacceptable! I really pity the staff because as a work, I know what it means to work all through the week. This is another case of 'monkey dey work baboo dey chop'. NLC should quickly do something about this.
ReplyDeleteIts is very true o. My broda's wife works wif Ecobank n she's neva home. Even saturdays n sundays. I hv become her son's surrogate mother.
ReplyDeleteTrue as cld ever be....married(???)to one....shez on her way 2 d offic as I write dis....one of dis dayz dey'l al av 2 choose wats rite.....by d time dey loose quality staff to fraudulent ones and the staff dem start loosing families.....one wld definitely av 2 giv in d end
ReplyDeleteWhat are u saying!it is very _very true!that is pure slavery and no extra allowance 4 all their stress!slavery indeed!!!
ReplyDeleteDis ecobank sef, and even after all dis their suffer u can't go to dat bank and ve rest of mind, u wil wait there til u re tired of waiting even during d week days dey re alwz upgrading system, shame on dat bank...
ReplyDeleteWhat sort of training could the operation managers be on?why today of all days?Ecobank, part of your priorities is to motivate your employees..I don't see the pratice, with this discovery by ckn & co.loans, air conditioned offices,mid-day snack are way out of favourable working conditions(motivation)for the workforce(assets).
ReplyDeleteMotivate ke? That's a long thing.. The only motivation we get is one stupid ecobank shirt. The rest of the staff falls into hall of shame
DeleteSincerely with all the respect i have for you ckn, u fumbled dis time around. all in the name of sha writing something must you mislead people with your bad journalism? i am one of the ecobank team, and there is nothing of such going on in the company. you are only mileading people with ur beer parlor news here and there. and even if they summon some staffs to come on weekends, did ur source also inform u about the incentives attached to it? no no never. u better work on ur professionalism and maintain ur respect... shikena.
ReplyDeleteGoing by ur comment you must be one of the oga @ the top. Did you get the mail from BOC to alleng-csms instructin them to come n monitor the atms on saturday n sunday? The incentive u boast of is just transport allowance and lunch (maximum of N2,000) so do not lie.
DeleteShut up Mr Ecobank team.u r definitely and truly a bloody liar! Alternatively, u might b one of those so called ogas dat sit wif yur so called mgt team to make such weird decisions.bad enough pple like yu will b particular abt attendance report to knw who came to office or not during d wknds.can yu post a proof of incentives yu do give yur staff whenever they come over the wknds?
DeleteJunk journalism @ its worst!!
ReplyDeleteA beg OOO,ckN is not perfect o! D guy just fumble once , pity am o. Pele ckn onikokuko
ReplyDeleteStaff & husbands of staff of ecobank why re u using abusive words on ckn they re only doing their job,if they re wrong in anyway kindly correct them pls.
ReplyDeleteWe stand by our story
ReplyDeleteBros, tnx for this.. I am currently a headteller in ecobank and sometimes a relief csm.. Ask anyone, for the past 3 months its been one training or the other. Training that have little bearing on the quality of work we deliver. It is true we were asked to come and monitor the atm on saturday n sunday to attend to any issues(and not for reconciliation).
DeletePlease bring this to the attention of the cbn (I doubt they care sha), if possible invite newspapers to carry the story further.
DeleteShekina, you are one of those wicked plp misleading the public and md' of ecobank.how much is involved for a mother.a sister.or husband to work in an orgaization from monday to sunday.for your information your hr are getting letters of resignation everyday why Slavery in disguise.the days of ur system uPgrade is over.u suffer your employee.can you compare the life of other bankers like first bank and others or then oceanic even now u can identify old oceanic staff from ecobank, they look haged like old school primary one teacher.let the mgtment of ecobank get it in their brain dat one day they will wake to see their brs empty, staff has gone to their competitors.just wait and see how it goes if u guys will not lose more customers if there is anyone remain.ecobank turn a new leave.I pity the suffering and smiling staff that are still there.headtellers and csms are dieing and many are getting diviours.woe unto u that useless ur fellow humanbeing in d the name of paying salary
ReplyDeleteBut no one is forced to work. There are other banks naa abi. So Y complain. Pls next news. Thank you
ReplyDelete@Orhyle,
DeleteThat people are suffering and smiling is never an indication that they are enjoying their present condition. The economy is bad and unemployment soaring higher and higher by the day. How many new industries open in your state to create employment vis-a-vis the number that graduate from the universities? Please let us mind our language when commenting on a public forum.
Do not blame him, he is either jobless or has someone feeding him. That is why he couldn't comprehend people's pains & doesn't know how it feels to work 24/7. Or maybe his parents are some of d "oga on top" milking the Nigeria treasury. Lol
DeleteAfter sacking majority of the staff, they do not have the workforce to meet up with the demands of their customers.. Walk into any branch, you will spend not less than 30mins on the queue and if one staff of that branch goes on leave, then God help you..
ReplyDeleteCKN, u r right with ur publication. Ecobank staffs have been closing late of recent and they also work on Saturdays for MIS coding and this weekend is for ATM monitoring. I have dropped my wife in her office last Saturday of May around 6.45am for MIS coding. NLC, pls look into this.
ReplyDeleteThanks CKN for this news.
ReplyDeleteThe slavish ways banks use their staff is becoming increasingly alarming.
Bedeviling so called marketers with outrageous targets as though CBN has asked for increase in capital base. Has the crave for deposit saved other banks in the past? No
Has it in any way increase the provision of good services?
No.
Ecobank sheepishly boast of their 5 DNAs meanwhile these so-called DNAs need to be clinically upgraded.
Integrity- Very absent
Innovation- please you lack this
Collaboration- with whom?
Effectiveness- don't get me upset
Entreprenuer- very lacking
You need aditional DNAs
I subscribe the following
Pro-active
Dynamic
Humility
Sincerity
Godliness
Empathy
Please help ur selfs with others.
This same Ecobank does not in anyway give incentives as in PR if they do you need to see the kobo kobo they give to their officers.
On the aspect of training they trouble the little ones to come saturdays and sundays while offshore traning are reserved for the ogas at the top with 5star hotels at their demands.
This is wickedness and slavery lacking every sense of professionalism and ethical business decorum.
CKN please expose them more and other banks too.
As far as I m. Concerned they might not be doing anyway but these banks are all same. Go to Access bank, staff reduced . A word of 3 people is done by 1.Go to first bank yu will think is a market place. I don't understand all the banks nowadays. So if these is happening in first bank, Access bank why mentioning one. I am a customer to the. 3banks but I will soon close my account with them. I knew their going to work sometimes on saturdays but I don't know of Sundays cos my fiancee was working and I asked her to resign and She did. What I know they lack is promotions. They don't promote their start on time.
ReplyDeleteYou who complains about sat/sunday u definitely are clowns, resign if u are tired and den Ckn u don't know wot u r writting trash did ur informant tell u dat the bank is putting most of dis training online called vbi so weekend trainings will be reduced?no I don't think so,why dis trainings so dat the old oceanic staff can learn the true ecobank way .So for the records the bank isn't doing any system upgrade. ATMS have to be monitored so how branches do it differs.so pls yarn beta no dey yarn opata
ReplyDeleteWhat about the legacy eng staff that have to attend thes useless trainings? Do they also hv to learn the ecobank way as well? Liars
DeleteAll tht has been said by CKN is true, the rate of tht slavery increased wen dey took over oceanic, and d alarming issue der is staff of oceanic get paid more dan d original eco staff,we close so late, system down-town,so many horrible issues,CSM's and head tellers victimaziation,no time fr rest or ur children or family, while we slave fr dem,dey collect al d pay,a lot of staffs are dying,u can confirm one, surulere head teller,so many like us ve resigned due to bad health issue and i can't but mention a lot of horrible thgs we ve passed tru in tht bank, may God forgive dem,fr me,it was a wasted years and no reward.
ReplyDeleteCKN report is correct in a way, although some wrong info are in there. The slavery is only applicable to branch staff, who are complaining not because they are lazy and not ready to work, but because the activities lined up on those wknds are meaningless. If ATM must work and staff has to standby to ensure that, why can't the bank think of improving the technology, ensure clean notes are available for their machines like the likes of SKYE bank? Asking staff to work under serious pressure kills their morale but because there is no ready option you just keep going until you drop dead. Many of the staff will love to resign but you don't get a dime until you have spent 10years, so they are in between the devil and the deep blue sea. NLC should help the Nigerian work force with the banks, because as soon as one bank gets away with one devilish activity, others follow suit.It is sad but when the economy is not even helping, people must continue to work and endure every form of abuse.Until corruption dies in this country, all other forms of wickedness will pass.
ReplyDeleteDo these staff have an option to resign or not? is the Bank forcing anyone to stay in its employment that does not wish to? if employees of Ecobank and their relatives can shamelessly encourage this type of negative publicity then much is to be desired! I understand there is a Union in the bank and staff have the right to report to the Union or infact NUC if they feel so strongly about what their employer is doing. I would like to add that this is poor journalism and a total disgrace to the journalism profession where accurate and objective reporting is key. The reporter also has VERY poor English and totally forgot to spell check.Shame on ANY Ecobank staff that has a hand in this!
ReplyDeleteThank you. As a staff the shame is not wit the staff but with the management of ecobank. As any customer ecobank is synonymous wit uselessness
DeleteSome Ecobank staff are a total disgrace. They simply lack foresight and are unable to key into their Bank's strategic journey. I pray the Bank can identify and flush out these misfits so that it can achieve its strategic goals. These misfits are simply like heavy rocks tied round an athlete's ankles. Imagine Usain Bolt carrying 50kg rocks tied to his feet before the race....would he have set world record today?....NO!!!!!! It is a total shame to read some of the responses obviously made by staff of the Bank. I don't work for the Bank but feel sorry for this renowned institution just knowing that it is carrying this calibre of humans in its workforce....what a pity. CKN, I concur with the last respondent that you are a disgrace to journalism if this is the kind of information you peddle round. God help Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteI am sure your are lying of not being part of d staff n ogas of Ecobank cos another notable thing d mgt team member learn how to do best is lying.I otherwise, then you are one of the beneficiaries of ogas dat enslave deir staff to enrich themselves.
DeleteI think I need to let you knw abt the relationship btw sweat n blood... Sweat of ones labour is gotten from the blood of dat person.when you ride on someone else's labour to grow n enrich yourself,u will fall blatantly as at when u don't expect.so think twice esp before giving comments. And the question is that can yu take that or pray for such for any of your family member?Toil like elephant and eat like rat.
CKN didn't even have the decency of obtaining a recent picture that carries the correct Brand logo of Ecobank. The Bank rebranded over 2 years ago but CKN is still displaying an obsolete logo. SMH....goes to say what quality of journalism they are capable of....INCORRECT and OBSOLETE!
ReplyDeleteThose criticizing CKN are obviously the "oga's @ d top cos its true, thanks to Eco bank, I have a distance relationship in the same city with my boyfriend cos he's always n i repeat always @ work,mon-sun,sometimes he stays as late as 11pm I know this cos ve had to check up on him once wen I cldnt reach his lines n i was super worried.Trust me if he had his way he wld ve quitted but its not easy getting another job,I pray he gets another job soon b4 he breaks down cos d stress is just too much.I will be glad if concerned bodies can look into these issues not just for the benefits of staff of Ecobank but other bankers as well.
ReplyDeleteWe wish to repeat that we stand by our story..We have loads of emails and evidences to back our story..Ecobank is not the ONLY Bank in Nigeria..The management team should do the needful and look into the complaints of its staff whom they are turning into slaves..A stitch in time saves nine.We may be forced to publish more reports on our findings on ECOBANK Plc soon.
ReplyDeleteIm ready to give you all the ammunition you need
DeletePlease publish if it is worth revealing and do not brandish an empty threat. I can confirm your report is incorrect and far from the truth. It is immoral and unprofessional to bring out certain communication or directive to their employees as facts underlying 'slavery' the so called bank. It is totally irresponsible to jump to conclusion on a simple directive as evidence of slavery in any organization. What a bad publication Too bad!
ReplyDeleteAnd to the so called disenchanted employees, life is about choices, give and take, I say to you, throw in the towel and damn the consequence.
You wld cry oga ecobank...
DeletePLEASE, HAVE MERCY.
ReplyDeleteCKN please publish the mails and evidences if you dare!
ReplyDeleteIf Ecobank actually pays their Tellers 47k, den its a vry big shame to dem, I will say that is slavery at its peak
