Boko Haram Kills 13 With Guns Hidden In Coffin

Suspected members of the Islamist sect, Boko Haram, who hid their assault rifles inside a coffin launched an attack against informants in Maiduguri on Friday, killing 13 people, witnesses said yesterday.
The suspects were soon found out and shot by security forces.
Soldiers, had on Thursday, also shot dead another eight suspected Boko Haram fighters in the city, leaving their bodies in a ditch in the restive city.
Friday’s attack by Boko Haram targeted members of a new youth vigilante group that has sprung up in Maiduguri, pointing out suspected members of the sect to the military.
The gunmen hid their Kalashnikov assault rifles inside a coffin draped in white cloth as if being prepared for a burial, allowing them to drive through the city’s numerous military checkpoints without being searched, witness Sheriff Aji said.
When they approached the vigilantes in a van, they pulled the rifles out from the coffin and opened fire, killing the civilians, Aji said.
“They continued shooting until they ran out of ammunition, then some courageous youth rounded them up and handed them over to the soldiers, who shot them dead as they attempted to escape,” Aji told The Associated Press. Aji said he counted eight dead suspected Boko Haram gunmen after the shooting.
Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, a military spokesman in the city, could not be reached for comment yesterday as security forces have shut down mobile phone networks throughout the northeast as part of the offensive.
The shooting comes after President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency on May 14 in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States.
Friday’s attack likely was retaliation for vigilantes pointing out eight Boko Haram fighters to soldiers on Thursday. A security official told the AP that soldiers shot dead eight of the suspected Boko Haram members on Thursday night. The official spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to journalists.

  5. It baffles my imagination. In a civilized country like ours with many professors, Law men etc. No body had ever asked of who are supporting these people with sophisticated guns.Surely they are being armed by influential citizens who pay them, arm them and tell them their target. Until and when people who support them are brought to book the killings and shooting will continue. Let the Governors of these states sit up and do their work and not rushing to Abuja to share Nigerian Naira. They are the chief executives of their states and they campaigned to be governors. Let them protect their citizens. I assure you he who rides on a Tiger would be devoured by the Tiger one day. Also he whose dog bites someone and he does not care or laughs would one day bitten by the same dog. To my northern governors you won't tell me that you do not know who the sponsors are. My advice to you northern governors is to act before you are consumed by these agents who kill people on instruction. I assure these sponsors will descend on you and your executives if you do not do their biddings in future. Let me ask one question--What are you governors discussing in your northern governors meetings. You go there to receive orders form old people in AREWA who would bias your minds about inconsequentials in the name of NORTH vs. SOUTH. Listen if you have ears to hear. There is an old proverb that says a dog that is destined to be killed by the Spirits does not hear the voice of its master. You are the chief executive of your state. You are duty bound to expose those who arm civilians with guns.

Thank you the author of "It baffles my imagination" above. You hit the nail on the head and supported it with universal proverbs. More of your advise to younger generation of Nigerians is needed. The sooner they live the older generation with their myopic ideas the better. By older generation I mean organizations like AREWA, NORTHERN ELDERS FORUM(NEF). By the way why does these organizations interfere with affairs of governors ruling the 19 states of the North? Readers please your comments are needed so that these old men would know their position in modern Nigeria. They need to be told that the young Northern Governors does not solicit for their advice and that they should not impose their old regional ideas to the young state governors. AREWA, NER etc are another way of siphoning Northern STATES money to the few rich old Northeners who thrive on old sentiments of North vs. South. Moreover it is high time these people realized that the present STATES would not act like the old Regional North. The difference is now clear.
While the old regional North paid allegiance to the old Kaduna Mafia, the present 19 states have nothing to do with Kaduna Mafia. To some of the 19 Northern Governors who refused to be used by these old men I say Thank You & "More grease to your elbows"
People are dying every day in hands of Boko Haram yet these old people have not called for a stop to killings of innocent citizens and they have the effontery to call the Northern Governors to protect their narrow interest and to donate money to them. To my Northern Governors, I implore you to not let these old people divert your attention from the people you are supposed to seek for their welfare and protect. Please use that money you will use to donate to these old men for the interest of the poor in your states and remember as the Chief Executives of your States, you are duty bound to safeguard LIFE & PROPERTIES of your citizens no matter their political colorations or religions. "Let he who has ear: Listen." To my Northern Governors these poor people, some of who are now armed by their sponsors are watching you with interest. Their sponsors are also watching with interest. You are duty bound to do your job as the Chief Executive of yours states.
Readers put your reactions in writing for all to see.

Good write up. There is nothing like Northern Elders Forum now and there is nothing like Northern Region now. All we have now is Northern Boko Haram Fathers and sympathizers period.

Well said.... I hope the Old people in AREWA, NEF, AREWA youth Organizations will open their eyes and condemn evil acts.
Many thanks to a few people and traditional rulers who came out openly to condemn atrocities committed by Boko Haram members. Nobody has yet asked: Who are the Sponsors of these Boko Haram people? Those caught by security agents are poor individuals who are struggling to survive on daily basis.
Where are their sponsors who armed and train them in the use of sophisticated weapons of destruction.
