The Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) has stated that the Benin-Ore road, Abuja-Lokoja road and the Lagos-Ibadan expressway are the worst accident prone roads and warned the public concerning these roads.
The Assistant Corp Marshal of the FRSC, Dennis Terrang, stated this recently at a Road Safety Regulatory Risk Management workshop in Abuja in collaboration with Shell Petroleum Development Corporation (SPDC).
He stated that the commission intended to reduce road accident by 20 per cent in 2013 and the number of people dying from fatalities to 30 per cent.
Terrang said the World Bank recently donated 12 ambulances to the commission, which he said worked as mini hospitals on the roads.
He said “we are partnering with so many people to provide road side clinics that are usually equipped with paramedics and other equipment.
“If you compare the number of road crashes before the establishment of FRSC, you will notice there have been great improvement.”
Speaking at the event, the Head of Department of Corporate Health, Safety and Environment, SPDC, Dr Amadi Amadi, stated that the company was pleased to play a central role in the effort at reducing fatalities and injuries on Nigerian roads through regulatory risk management capacity building.
“We aim to have a safety performance we can be proud of and relentlessly pursue Goal Zero in all aspects of work, including land transport,” he said.
Amadi further noted that the company would continue to support the federal, state and local governments in road safety improvement through other initiatives such as road safety teacher training, road safety clubs, community road safety improvement projects, public awareness campaigns and road safety equipment donations.
