Four prisoners on death row were executed yesterday by
officials of the Nigeria Prison Services in Edo State.
One of those also to be executed is
to die by firing squad.
The four prisoners were killed after
a Federal High Court rejected a lawsuit file by some Non-Government
Organisations (NGOs) against signing of the execution warrants by Governor
Adams Oshiomhole.
Edo State Commissioner for Justice
and Attorney-General, Henry Idahagbon confirmed the execution but said it was
an affair of the Nigeria Prisons.
He said a notice of appeal was
brought to him but whether it was served on prisons officials were not his
concern.
The names of the executed prisoners
could not be confirmed as at press time.
Deputy Director for Africa at
Amnesty International, Lucy Freeman, in a statement, called for the halting of
the executions and described the court decision as a major setback for justice
and human rights in Nigeria.
“The Nigerian authorities must
immediately halt the execution of these five men and allow them to appeal their
cases in the courts.”
According to Amnesty International’s
Death Sentences and Executions 2012 report, Nigeria has not carried out any
known executions since 2006, but sentenced 56 people to death last year.
Approximately, 1000 people are reportedly on death row in the country.

DeleteAn eye for an eye
Edo state gov is doing the right thing.
Human life is a precious thing and we must protect life.
Therefore when a life is taken which is a very serious matter we must make sure it never happens again by eliminating those that think human life is cheap.
As far as the law permits it, Oshiomhole did well by hanging those convicts
ReplyDeleteDnt mind dis stupid ppl dat r jst openin der toilet cal mouth dey talk nonsense. Who send dem 2 go nd commit d crime b4? Abeg, make we hear word.
DeleteSome people just talk without reasoning. Bible even said it that he who kill with sword shall die by sword. How can some people kill their fellow human being cos they want to rob them, or in the case of hired assasin and when their turn to die comes people will be soliciting for them? Do you knw hw many homes they've made cry, do u knw hw many children they've turn fatherless, motherless or both? This will sound a note of warning to other evil perpetrators.
ReplyDeleteWe establish laws to preserve our sanctity as humans with the fear of God and follow natural course of events, and they cry to the high heavens condemning such laws (same sex marriage laws). And yet you execute a man who deprived a fellow human being of life and you support that.
ReplyDeleteEach countries has law dat govern them, Saudi Arabi said don't carry drugs into they country once u do dat d judgemnt is kill. So dis pple av killed many innocent souls and now is they time 2 die foolish sumbdy now blame (OSHIO) Edo state governor and said APC........ Nigeria law said u shal not kill
ReplyDeleteNa u go dey feed dem? Abeg sharrrrap der
ReplyDeleteYou didn't deem it fit to investigate the kind of pple that were sentenced to death. They were more of ritual killers, extricating human parts. This has been going on for long.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's time they know how it feels to die, like their victims.
Are U saying dat d pple be spared no matter their offence? Dat is not justice and dat is deviation frm divine laws....an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a life for a life. Evil MUST be purged wit harsh punishment.
ReplyDeleteWhatever, the case may be,approving their death was a wrong option for the governor.can't kill criminals, who where happy, and probably contributive toward ur election process.leT stop the killing n stop the bleeding!!!!
ReplyDeleteU b goat 3:42pm u never jam armrobber
