Former governor of Imo State, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, has said he had
never been invited, arrested or detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission, EFCC, in connection with alleged N62 billion fraud peddled by
Governor Rochas Okorocha.
Chief Ohakim, who was reacting to the fraud allegation during a
telephone interview, equally fired back that Okorocha was talking nonsense.
“Before I left office, I prepared a 300-page handover note and an
accompanying 22-page summary, which I handed over to Governor Rochas Okorocha,”
Ohakim said.
According to him, the handover document contained the 900 water
schemes, as well as other projects initiated and completed by his
administration in four years.
“For Okorocha to say that my administration barely managed to
complete two or three projects during my tenure is a sure proof that he never
read, has refused to read, or did not understand what I put down in the
handover document,” Ohakim said.
He recalled that the long stretch of Isiekenesi-Osina road, which
was awarded by the Sam Mbakwe administration in 1983 and abandoned by
subsequent administrations in the state, was completed by him.
On the issue of the state’s Internally Generated Revenue, IGR,
Ohakim explained that it was usually collected by the bank and remitted to the
27 local governments at the turn of every new month.
He described insinuations making the rounds in Imo State and a
publication by an Owerri based tabloid that he had been arrested as a figment
of the reporter’s mind.
He wondered where the newspaper got its information from, adding
that he was neither arrested nor detained by the EFCC.
Ohakim said: “I was not arrested or invited by the EFCC and
I do not know where they got their information from.
“What did I do that EFCC would arrest me? If EFCC invites me, I
will answer them. In fact, since I left office, the agency had invited me once
or twice to come and give some information.
“I have never been arrested before by EFCC and as I am speaking to
you (Vanguard), I am holding a meeting in my office at Asokoro, Abuja.”
