FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo on
Tuesday said the President Goodluck Jonathan administration had not been
reaching out enough to the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, and canvassed what
he described as a “carrot-and-stick” strategy to address the sect’s menace.
Obasanjo told the CNN in an interview
that Jonathan had been applying less of dialogue and more of force in solving
the Boko Haram issue.
“To deal with a group like that, you
need a carrot and stick. The carrot is finding out how to reach out to them.
When you try to reach out to them and they are not amenable to being reached
out to, you have to use the stick,” the ex-President said.
He said Jonathan was “just using the
stick.”
“He’s doing one aspect of it well,
but the other aspect must not be forgotten,” he added.
But the Presidency, in a reaction to
the ex-President’s submission, said Obasanjo’s position on the Boko Haram issue
had been contradictory.
Jonathan’s spokesman, Reuben Abati, said
that it was surprising that the same Obasanjo who said recently that his
presidency applied force when he was confronted with similar situation in Odi,
Rives State, has now turned round to accuse Jonathan of applying only the stick
against Boko Haram.
“It is surprising. That means the
former President contradicted himself. Were you not in this country recently
when he said that when he was confronted with a similar issue in Odi, he
applied force? Where exactly does he stand on this matter?” Abati said.
He said that contrary to what
Obasanjo wanted the world to believe, the Federal Government’s handling of the
Boko Haram menace had been purposeful and that a lot of progress had been made.

Obasanjo is a totally confused. How can someone be contradicting himself like that. Perhaps, he want to portray himself good in d face of the wwhole world thru CNN.
ReplyDeleteWell am not suprised at what the former president has said (that is yoruba for you) they will smile at you and destroy you at the back.
ReplyDeleteNo yoruba person should bother to join issues with this careless remark. The issue at hand is for the presidency to ignore the old man. The president has the mandate of Nigerians to tackle issues as he deem fit. He should only listen to constructive critisism . There are millions of Nigerians who believe the President is not hard enough on this devilish group and their masters in National Assembly.Period
ReplyDeleteReally surprised at Obasanjo's speeech! I think Goodluck Jonathan is doing his best.He didn't create the mess in the country. He met it! We gotta support him to bring out the best in our dear country. Abi we get another country?!
ReplyDeleteOBJ with his drama again. He shld just learn 2be serious 4once.

DeleteIt does not suprise me concerning this old man called Obasanjo,he is a confused man.Goodluck should concentrate on his administration and make sure his tenure is worthy of emulation.
ReplyDeleteUnderstand him well Ooo, Odi case is defferent from Boko guys, cos odi were visible while Boko are not. I think dat is why OBJ is saying Carrot and stick
ReplyDeleteMost of those that commented never bothered analysing why Obasanjo suggested the carrot/stick approach. He's an elder stake man when it comes to Nigerian Politics. Abati did what he was paid to do, saying everything in favor of Jonathan's administration. Please let's be rational in our views.
ReplyDeleteVery compused all mumu,
ReplyDeleteWhere are OBJ's advisers? Pls they shld continue to guide him in speech making, don't blame him sha cosidering his age and mental decline.
ReplyDeleteLet us not be a centre referee that rejoices over a goal scored by an opponent in a football match. We should hear former president OBJ's side of the matter before drawing conclusion. Never forget that Mr Abati is part of President GEJ and must do his assigned job. However, President GEJ is making vital efforts in checking this menace; but what we need is a final solution!
ReplyDeleteExactly, let's look back n see what OBJ says concerning the application of less dialogue n more force in tackling d BH menace, pls Nigerians reason with him.
