More
than 2000 women at the weekend protested the rising killings in some villages
in Plateau State.
There have been attacks by gunmen,
especially in Barki Ladi and Riyom Local government areas of the state, which
have resulted in the death of no fewer than 22 people in the past week.
The protesting women, mainly of Berom
ethnic stock, were particularly angry over the shooting of a woman said to be
on her way to the farm by unknown gunmen.
They blocked Jos-Abuja highway
forcing motorists to make a detour to their destination.
The arrival of soldiers in the area
did not change the situation but rather their presence infuriated the women who
accused them of not doing enough to stop the killings.
Although, the women were later
dispersed by the security agents, tension has continued to mount in the area.
Meanwhile, two people have been shot
dead by unknown gunmen in Karkru village in the area.
Two other people were also injured by
the gunmen in another incident which occurred in the early hours of yesterday
at Burdiga, Garshish District in Barki Ladi local government of the state.
A resident, Mr Mark Lipdo, who
confirmed the incident to Sunday Mirror in Jos yesterday gave the names of the
dead victims as Bulus Mashigi and Silas Malo.
He called on the security agents to
live up to their responsibilities and stop the incessant attacks on the
innocent villagers.
