Nigerians from all walks of life have condemned the
recent strike embarked by members of THE National Union of Petroleum and
Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) who are in sympathy with their members sacked on
Wednesday by the MRS Oil and Gas Plc.
According to CKN Nigeria correspondents who visited
most of the Petrol stations in some parts of the country where the strike is
already taking its tolls, they condemned the incessant resort to strike by the
union to drive home their grievances.
Mr Emaka Anyaoku who lives in Abuja says this is a
strike too many and wondered why NUPENG always subject Nigerians to undue
hardship at the slightest excuse.
In her own response Mrs Tonye Briggs was so furious
about the action of the Union that she asked the government to ban the union
from operating. She called the action of the union irresponsible.
It will be recalled that The President of NUPENG,
Comrade Igwe Achese told news men that the strike would continue until the MRS
management reinstates the sacked drivers.
Achese said: "Despite the promises and
understanding reached between the union and the management of MRS, the company
still went ahead to sack our members, about 2,500 tanker drivers.
"The action of the company is not acceptable to us
as a union. Imagine sacking 2,500 people with families and dependents at this
time of the year. What does company want them to do?"
He said the strike would be restricted to the Lagos
zone, which includes Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, Oyo, Osun and Kwara States.
Other parts of the country depend on this area for
supply of fuel; therefore, it would be more like a national strike.
Besides, Achese said that other parts of the country
might join the strike in sympathy and solidarity.
Already long queues have been recorded in Abuja, some
parts of Lagos,Port Harcourt and other major cities in the country..CKN
