To
who much is giving, so much is expected..It is with this phrase that after
carefully listening to the new single track from one of Africa’s biggest star
Dbanj, our verdict is that the song fall far below par and expectation.
Dbanj
has in the past while with his bosom friend under the Mo’hit label turned out
mega singles and albums that has broken several existing records in sales
across Africa.
He
is the undisputed king in his own genre of music probably closely followed by
Tuface and Psquare.
His
vocals and lyrics has always been a delight to all. Apart from the dancehall a
rhythm that flows with high tempo pace, Dbanj songs have always been a
masterpiece of note.
After
the not too good controversial break up with his long time pal Don Jazzy which
led to his establishing MAVIN Records, Dbanj on his part has gone ahead to also
pull up a label with some notable young talented artistes on his bill.
Based
on this premix, expectation was high; people were looking forward to another
mega war in music when the Nigeria King of the Harmonica will release his next
song.
OYATO
to some of his die hard fans would be the capping to a long successful career
of the Lagos State University graduate artiste.
When
the single was eventually released about a week ago on his new record label, DB Records, in association with Def Jam
Recordings, having already signed legendary Nigerian producer to the label, the
one and only J Sleek it was expected
that the Single would be the music of the year.
But far below every expectation,OYATO is just a
below another below average song.
The lyrics were childish, uncoordinated and incoherent.
Delivery of the song was also nothing to write home about.
The rhythm was good but not the quick danceable
pace that Dbanj and Don Jazzy were noted for.
The use of Yoruba language could have been a
plus as usual for him, but his self praise made the song ONLY directed at those
who did not share his views.
For now, we leave it at that but hope that the
other songs in the final album will meet our full expectation else, we may have
to call Don Jazzy to come back and help Dbanj in finding his lost rhythm ..CKN
