President Goodluck Jonathan has
ordered the acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, to
arrest the killers of the Principal Private Secretary to Edo State Governor
Adams Oshiomhole, Mr. Olaitan Oyerinde.
Oyerinde was killed in his Benin home
by unknown gunmen on Friday.
Jonathan at the opening of a
one-day workshop on power at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday said
the case should be thoroughly investigated and those directly or indirectly
involved in the dastardly act brought to book.
The President, who expressed
his condolences to Oshiomhole over the development, said investigation into the
killing would not go the same way of past unresolved murder cases.
Jonathan said, “I have directed that
cases of murder must be properly investigated in this country so that at the
end of the day, we must know what happened; not just in Edo State, but other
challenges that are facing us on a daily basis.”
He regretted the spate of killings in
the country, saying the situation did not speak well of Nigeria.
He also decried the security
challenges in some parts of the country, reiterating his administration’s
commitment to tackling the situation.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic
Party, Edo State chapter, on Monday described Oyerinde’s killing as
“wicked and huge loss to the state”.
In a statement by its Publicity
Secretary, Mr Matthew Urhoghide, the party called for a full investigation into
the matter.
It said, “The news of
Oyerinde’s death came to some of us who knew him and even those who never met
this fine, respectful young man as a wicked surprise, huge loss and a very
dangerous development in our state.
“Oyerinde was a harmless, urbane
person, who would not hurt a fly. His killers deserve no mercy even in hell
fire at the appropriate time.”
On the governor’s threat to use other
options to unravel the death, the party cautioned Oshiomhole “not to resort to
unjustified reprisal attacks and or uncivilised means to resolve the matter”.
