A man, Mr. Jonathan Igbinomiahie, who allegedly killed
his 75-year-old mother, Mrs. Janet Igbinomiahie, after accusing her of
witchcraft, has died.Jonathan, according to the police, died at the Central
Hospital, Benin, Edo State, on Saturday.Confirming his death, the state Police
Public Relations Officer, Mr. Etim Bassey, said Jonathan complained of
undisclosed sickness before he was taken to the Central Hospital, where he
later died.Bassey added that the command had at other times taken him to the
Psychiatric Hospital, in Uselu, where he also received treatment.He said,
“Somebody came and said he was a psychiatric patient, so the police had been
taking him to the hospital. When he was taken to the Central Hospital, he died
in the hospital. Even other detainees have been talking about his behaviour.
“The corpse is in the Central Hospital morgue; so for
now, we don’t know the cause of his death.
Jonathan had on May 2 in
Obagie in Ehor, Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of the state, allegedly killed
his mother.A source said that “the 36-year-old man had accused his mother of
being responsible for his inability to make progress in life.The source had
said, “Jonathan had complained in the past that things were not as rosy as he
expected. There was a time he confronted the mother and accused her of
witchcraft. He said the woman had been using her power to hinder his progress.“On
the day of the crime, Jonathan went to his mother’s apartment and when he
discovered that she was alone in the house, he shot her with a dane gun and
later used a cutlass to cut her repeatedly.“Some people were later attracted to
the scene by the cry of the woman.“Jonathan also set the house on fire. As soon
as he saw the people that came to rescue the woman, he ran away but he was
later caught by the youth and who took him to Ehor Police Division, which is
the nearest police station to the village.”
