The children of Sunday Iluegbe, a police
inspector, who allegedly killed his wife, Caroline, last Friday have urged
members of the public to come to their aid.Sunday stabbed his wife to death at
their Olosan Police Barracks, Lagos, home and later fled the scene. The five
children are Becky (18), Linda (16), Jenkins (14), Okhai (11) and Ohis (seven),
Although none of them witnessed the killing, Linda said she was the first to
see her mother’s corpse. She said, “My mother had not been living with us for a
while but she used to come and sleep in our father’s apartment at least four
times in a week.“On Thursday night, when she came, we all ate before going to
bed. My parents slept in the sitting room while the five of us slept in the
bedroom.“Around 3am, I woke up to make use of the loo and I saw my mum lying
down on the floor. At that point, I didn’t know she was dead. So, I tried to
wake her up.”Linda said because there was outage, she could not see her mother
very well. She said she alerted her siblings about the position she found their
mother and they went to get a lamp but were shocked to see her dead.Linda said,
“On getting to the sitting room with the lamp, we saw our mother’s corpse on
the floor with stab wounds and her face was covered with a scarf.“We did not
see our dad in the room. So, we tried to open the door and alert the neighbours
but we realised that the door had been locked from outside.”She said they had
to pass through the window of the storage room before they could get outside. She
added that their mother was taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital,
Idi-Araba, where she was later confirmed dead. The deceased, who was a caterer,
at the National Stadium, was 41 years old. When asked if there was an argument
between their parents, the children said they did not hear any noise.Linda
said, “We did not hear any argument and they were on talking terms. They were
not even divorced. They were only living separately due to a misunderstanding.“Sometime
last year, our mother was ill and our father refused to give her money for
treatment. So, she travelled to her hometown in Edo State but when she
returned, he refused to allow her back in.”Linda wondered how they would
complete their education.Ohis, the youngest of the children, expressed fear
that their father could come back and kill them.
